A Vulnerability Index of Scottish Towns (2011)
This Research Briefing reports the key findings of exploratory research which uses a 'Vulnerability Index' to calculate the vulnerability of 44 Scottish towns to economic downturn associated with public sector funding cuts.
The local-scale impacts of the cuts have not been widely investigated, but research suggests that many towns have a high dependence on public sector jobs, suggesting they may be highly vulnerable to public spending cuts.
Further Rural Policy Centre work on towns is planned over the coming months, with the results to be included in the 2012 Rural Scotland in Focus Report (to be published in Spring 2012).
