Rural Businesses (2010)
This research briefing discusses the key findings from a survey of rural businesses in the North East of England carried out in 2009. 88% of survey respondents were sole traders and microbusinesses and just over 38% of respondents reported that their business was part of, or attached to, their home. Although the economic downturn had a negative impact on some business owners, the overall picture was reasonably positive with 39% of owners still planning growth.
The Briefing also draws out some of the implications of the findings for rural Scotland.
