Distribution of local and locality food activity in Scotland (2008)

Growing consumer interest in the provenance and quality of food, along with concern over the increasingly complex nature of agricultural food chains and recent awareness of the carbon emissions associated with these food supply chains has prompted an increasing interest in foods of local and regional provenance. At the same time agricultural and food policy is increasingly recognising the importance of local and regional food to local economies and communities. This briefing therefore reports recent research to map and analyse the distribution of local food activity in Scotland. This work provides a useful review of local food activity in Scotland at a time when the Scottish Government is developing a national food policy, which is embracing a widespread desire to enhance local food activity.
