Third Rural Scotland in Focus Round Table Debate on 'On- and Off-Shore Renewables: Who Benefits?' (October 2011)

The third Rural Scotland in Focus Round Table Debate was held on October 18th 2011, bringing together influential players and stakeholders from the policy arena, from the private, public and third sectors, and from communities.

The Debate was kick-started by four brief presentations representing different perspectives, followed by group discussions focused on three key questions: Who currently benefits from renewables? How do they benefit? What might need to change to ensure sustained benefit for different stakeholders? A Briefing was produced summarising the key messages from the Debate and this is available below.

Participants identified a number of areas in which change is required to ensure sustained benefits for all stakeholders including: addressing skills gaps in the renewables industry; assisting communities with the challenges associated with renewables developments; the need for cross-sectoral partnership working and two-way engagement; the need for a more strategic, long-term governance framework; and a clearer identification of the possible benefits and how they can be realised.
