What might the re-election of an SNP Government mean for rural Scotland?

Following the SNP’s historic election victory, what might a second consecutive term of office for the Party mean for rural Scotland? As the new majority government begins its term, the Rural Policy Centre (RPC) has reviewed in its latest Briefing the SNPs key priorities for agriculture and rural issues, as set out in their main Manifesto and their Farming Manifesto. These include:

  • Building on the principles of the Pack Inquiry to maintain food production at the heart of agriculture policy; seek to maximise Scotland’s share of Pillar 1 and Pillar 2 funding and implement a more streamlined and focused SRDP post-2013;
  • Continue to reduce the number of inspections visits to Scottish farms through SEARS;
  • Establish a new Scottish Land Fund, with proposals for this set out by the end of 2011; establish a Land Reform Review Group to review land reform legislation;
  • A new £2.4 million fund to enable community investment in renewable projects;
  • Accelerate the roll-out of superfast broadband across the whole of Scotland through a £50 million digital connectivity initiative; expand 3G mobile phone coverage across Scotland;
  • Continue to press the UK government to take action on lower fuel prices in Scotland.
