The Implications of Changing Public Sector Budgets for Rural Scotland
Unprecedented programmes of public sector spending cuts have been announced by the UK Coalition Government. Scotland has seen its budget reduced by £1.3 billion in 2011-12 compared to 2010-11, resulting in spending cuts at all levels of government and across all portfolios.
The Rural Policy Centre has explored the impacts of the cuts on rural areas in Scotland, including the implications of reductions in public sector jobs and pay, benefits and service provision. In collaboration with Rose Regeneration and the Rural Services Network, the Centre has produced and analysed a 'Vulnerability Index' of local authorities which assesses their vulnerability to further economic downturn associated with severe public expenditure cuts. The Index highlights that rural and urban areas will share the pain of the budget cuts, but that some rural local authority areas are more vulnerable to the cuts than others.
The Index and other issues are discussed in the report available via the link to the right. The Centre is planning to do more work on this issue over the coming months to continue to explore the impacts of the cuts.
