Day 1: Setting off… (Friday May 13th: Duns to Perth to Beauly)

Map of Sarah's travels (opens in new window)

On a sunny, east coast afternoon, we headed up from Duns in the Scottish Borders, to pick up the motorhome in Perth. I’d chosen Scottish Tourer Motorhome Hire, having searched through several early in January to see who could offer us the flexibility for this kind of trip. We loaded up our belongings, and in mid-afternoon, headed up the A9 to Beauly, near Inverness.

The weather was changeable, so as well as getting used to driving this large vehicle (especially judging its width), I had to work out headlights, windscreen wipers etc. The rear-view camera was fun too when I got used to it (you forget at first that you haven’t got a rear-view mirror). We arrived near Beauly about 9pm and picked a spot down by the Beauly Firth, with a great view of the Kessock Bridge with its lights twinkling into the evening. Across the field, a family were barbecuing in the evening sunlight. Cooked dinner and had an early night.
