Stockman Competency

The most significant single influence on the welfare of any flock is the shepherd, who should develop and carry out an effective routine for continuing care. The Welfare of Farmed Animals (Scotland) Regulations 2000 states that: 'Animals shall be cared for by a sufficient number of staff who possess the appropriate ability, knowledge and professional competence'.

SAC runs one day courses specifically designed to provide training in lambing management skills.  These courses are updated by new research findings from within SAC and elsewhere.  Your local advisory office will be able to tell you when the next course is planned for your area.

SAC has also produced a booklet on the management of easicare sheep systems (see the link to the right).
