Emasculator

Burdizzo castration is based on the principle that crushing destroys the spermatic cord carrying blood to the testicles, but that the skin of the scrotum remains intact.

Method

  • Approach the standing animal from behind and push one of the cords to the outside of the scrotum
  • Next, apply the jaws of the Burdizzo, checking that the cord is held in one place by the cord-stops and firmly close the handles
  • Leave in place for 5 seconds or longer
  • Now proceed to do the cord on the other side
  • The procedure is best repeated under the first crush (i.e. make sure the crush marks on each side do not join to form a continuous line)

Advantages

  • Bloodless method
  • Infection or maggot infestation seldom occurs

Disadvantages

  • Slow procedure
  • May result in only partial castration
