Chemical Method
Caustic disbudding liquid or paste (caustic potash, or caustic soda) can be applied to the horn "button" of calves to stop horn growth. This method is used primarily on more intensive farms where calves can be easily handled. It may only be legally used on calves of under 1 week of age and is generally discouraged by the UK welfare codes (see the links to the right).
Method
Expose the horn bud by pushing the hair back
Apply the caustic liquid to the horn button
Allow the hair to cover the horn button
Advantages
- Ease of application
- Young calves are easier to handle
Precautions
- Avoid contact with the eyes of the calf
- Wear gloves when applying
- Do not use in rainy weather
