Sustainable Tourism: A Transatlantic Perspective
Summary
Six Higher Education Institutions have come together to promote a student-centred, Canada-Europe dimension to education and training in sustainable tourism. The institutions’ goals are to:
- Work more closely with international partners
- Enhance and promote their unique physical locations
- Diversify student and staff profiles
The group is characterised by unique human resources, Higher Education traditions and institutional operating experiences.
Key Challenges
The goals of the programme include exploring, studying and working towards a better understanding of sustainable tourism with additional benefits in cross-cultural communications and international relations. The long term goal of the project is to develop a Canadian/European Union partnership that continues to support academic exchanges involving staff and student to strengthen tourism programmes at each partner institution.
"Six HEIs in Canada and Europe are working together to improve education and training in sustainable tourism."
Key Benefits
The objectives of the programme include:
- Identification and/or development of a series of courses that focus on the tourism opportunities unique to each consortium partner
- Identification of courses which can be delivered by distance education and which require a “hands-on” component at each partner site
- Development of a mechanism to ensure that students completing part of their studies at a partner institution receive appropriate credit towards their qualification at their home institution
In addition, students may be awarded a certificate of participation in this sustainable tourism project.
Each year the partner institutions identify a number of students to study as an exchange student at a partner institution (in the case of SAC students at a Canadian partner institution). The sending institution nominates exchange students and tuition fees remain with the sending institution. There is also the opportunity for staff exchange. A portion of the costs incurred by the exchange students and staff are covered by Mobility Programme funds.
Our Partners
The project is part of the Canada – European Union Programme for Co-operation in Higher Education, Transatlantic Exchange Partnerships (TEP).
