Research Note Full Title

Conservation headlands in grassland systems

Three grass conservation headlands have been established in grassland fields in Ayrshire and Fife using the prescription derived under previous work in Dumfries & Galloway.

Data on botanical composition and structure, surface-active invertebrate assemblages and bird utilisation is being recorded within the headlands and adjacent areas each year, together with the details of the management practised on each site throughout each year.

Objectives

To further develop the grass conservation headlands research base and test the relevance of the approach developed in Dumfries & Galloway on different grassland situations in other areas of Scotland.

Approach

The data recorded will be compared and contrasted with similar data collected from two existing sites in Dumfries & Galloway (one of which is on Crichton Royal Farm).  This will be used to validate (and if necessary refine) the existing prescription.

It is envisaged that the project will lead to the development of appropriate and effective guidelines for the establishment and management of grass conservation headlands across Scotland.
