PASTORAL Workshop 1: Spain
The first PASTORAL workshop was held in July 2001, in the village of Soto del Real, central Spain, and brought together 35 experts from 12 different countries including Poland, Romania and Slovakia.
The workshop was launched with a field trip on the first day to meet with farmers and agricultural extension workers in the Sierra de Guadarrama Mountains. This excursion set the context for the following three days of sessions during which the focus was on establishing what is known (and unknown) about the extent and agricultural characteristics of high nature value pastoral systems throughout Europe.
The meeting took a systems based approach to identifying the key gaps in information or research priorities and the driving forces of change. By doing so, the project recognises that it is essential to examine the entire farming system, particularly socio-economic factors, if effective policies are to be developed which maintain functioning and viable pastoral systems.
