Scottish Highlands

This group is led by SAC farm adviser Ron Duncan. Around 10 farmers took part in the discussions.

Most of the farmers are based around Inverness, from Aviemore in the South to Lairg in the North. Some of them came from the North West, in crofting areas.

The predominant hill breeds are the Scottish Blackface and Cheviot, although some of the farmers also keep Shetlands. Flocksize vary from 400 ewes to 2000.

Most of the farmers have some common grazing. Farmers lamb a high portion of their ewes outdoors.

A high proportion of the lambs is sold store, but depending on the market, some farmers prefer finishing theirs on homegrown fodder.

Some of the farmers in the group also keep suckler cows, from 20 to 110.
