Gathering and shepherding surveys
Shepherd on a quad moving a flock of sheep (opens in new window)
Data were collected in 2 areas: by direct observation and data collection during the shearing gather, and by survey of the focus group farms' gathering management and perception of the stress associated with gathering. Together, these allowed us to assess the quantity and quality of labour used, and the impact on welfare.
Shepherding survey:
The overall aim was to improve understanding of the interactions between management decisions and sheep welfare, in the context of labour management. A multi-attribute labour:welfare matrix was developed and a survey was undertaken to populate it. The primary data collection was web based. It examined the role shepherds have in the care of hill sheep and identified the key skills and knowledge required.
