Postgraduate Research Degrees

SAC offers excellent opportunities for research leading to a higher degree, usually a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). In some cases, particularly for those studying part-time, the Master of Science (MSc) by research or the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is a more appropriate aim.
Our research degrees are awarded by the Universities of Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Glasgow.
A PhD should be attainable in 36 months full-time and we encourage you to do so, but the progress of a research project is difficult to predict and it may take longer. You should bear in mind however that any funding you receive from your funding body is likely to be for a 3 year period.
If you register part-time for a PhD, the prescribed period of study is 72 months. The prescribed period of study for the MSc by research is 12 months, while for the MPhil, the prescribed period of study is 24 months full-time and 48 months part-time.
