Can genetic improvement deliver multiple public-private good outcomes? - Eileen Wall, 15/12/11
Contemporary livestock production systems have a dual role combining food production and public good objectives. There are a number of global change drivers that will have to be reflected in future breeding goals (e.g., climate change, environmental impact, food security). Some of these public good have a partial economic benefit that can be incorporated in private breeding gaols. However, some public targets and private targets may not always be compatible and could be in conflict. This seminar will explore the methods for the inclusion of public goods (GHG emissions, animal welfare) in private breeding goals and quantify the impact on private and public targets. Further the seminar will explore potential future targets for livestock breeding goals and how they could be reflected in future breeding goals.
