Team Profiles
The Research Group has a strong track record both for the scientific quality and the practical relevance of its research. There is a strong ethos of collaboration with other research groups within SAC, in the UK and internationally, and with industry. A high proportion of our external research grants are LINK projects, involving matched government and industry funding.
The Group also provides consultancy and other services linked to its research strengths. There are close links with SAC’s Select Services, though much of our knowledge transfer is routed directly to end users, especially policy makers, and breeding and recording agencies.
To meet our aims, the Group comprises about 90 staff, located at SAC’s facilities at the Bush Estate (Edinburgh), Dairy Research Centre (Dumfries) and Hill and Mountain Research Centre (Crianlarich) and comprises four research teams:
- Animal Behaviour and Welfare
- Animal Breeding and Development
- Dairy Research Centre
- Hill and Mountain Research Centre
Epidemiology Research Unit
Inverness based Epidemiology Research Unit is focused on improving and maintaining animal population health and welfare by integrating a range of science, including epidemiology, to develop our understanding of animal disease control.
Hill and Mountain Research Centre
The Centre, with its team of systems-scale researchers, is based at Kirkton and Auchtertyre Farms, a 2,600 ha Highland estate near Crianlarich, west Perthshire in the west Highlands of Scotland.
