The afternoon session of the Livestock Research Conference, March 2007 looked at Work Package 2.5 Livestock Genetics & Management For Product Quality & Sustainability.
Professor Geoff Simm told an audience of around 100, “It’s clear that improving survival and vigour of young animals, improving productive lifespan and improving product quality and ‘fit’ with market needs all make important contributions to cutting greenhouse gas emissions per kilogram of product. Much of our work is focussed on selective breeding to improve these characteristics.
“Importantly, however, these improvements also produce benefits for animal welfare, producers’ economic performance, consumers and the environment.
“Other parts of our programme are aimed at assessing and improving other environmental impacts of livestock systems, and with optimum use of the new information emerging from livestock genome mapping.”
