Biodiversity Unit
The biodiversity unit is led by Davy McCracken and consists of three research staff and one postgraduate student based at SAC Auchincruive and one postgraduate student based at SAC Edinburgh.
We work closely with colleagues within SAC and other research institutes not only to increase scientific understanding of farm management and biodiversity interactions in a range of farmland habitats but also to used the findings of the research to develop and improve agri-environment schemes and prescriptions. We have a strong research record in understanding the farm management and wider environmental factors influencing farmland biodiversity (especially invertebrate and birds) at the field, farm and landscape scales.
Current research capabilities include farmland biodiversity indicators, the use of Geographical Information Systems and agro-ecosystem modelling. Output from our research is mainly through refereed journal and conference/policy briefings, but we also contribute to responses to consultations. We also work closely with colleagues within SAC and elsewhere to enhance knowledge transfer of the findings arising from our research.
