CT Scanner (opens in new window)
'CT scanning can give an immediate impact on the accuracy of EBVs and index scores, both for scanned animals and their relatives. Staff at the CT Unit at SAC are ‘super-efficient’ and helpful. Present financial help from EBLEX, QMS and HCC provides an excellent opportunity for breeders to identify rams with high lean growth and other favourable carcass attributes.'
Clare Edwards, Company Secretary, Suffolk Sire Reference Scheme Ltd.
'CT is an invaluable aid in the final selection of any ram considered as a possible sire. In particular the dramatic effect of the highlighted variation in KO% in terms of final meat yield.'
Richard Oates, Texel breeder
'Scanning helps to put the ‘butter on the bread’. What do I mean? I refer to the first year we scanned - our on farm scanning predicted the best on farm top 15 lambs, unadjusted for contemporary comparisons. We then selected our lambs to go to the CT unit. The lamb which was top on farm dropped to 12th - How come? After breaking down the CT scan figures, his KO% was the worst in the group.'
J. Arnold Park, Suffolk and Texel breeder
'CT scanning is a most useful service to us and greatly compliments the ultrasound scanning operation. It gives us a much more accurate picture of the distribution of muscle and fat throughout the complete carcass of the animal. We are able to use the information to make a final decision on which rams are likely to produce lambs with the best killing out percentage and distribution of muscle, in particular on the gigot.'
H. Martin Scott, Scottish Blackface and Meatlinc breeder
