Spring barley harvest in Edinburgh (opens in new window)
On the best land, largely around Boghall Farm, there is an intensive arable crop rotation which includes winter wheat, winter and spring barley, set-aside and grass.
The traditional seed potato growing enterprise was terminated in 1994.
Cereals and grass are conserved as silage and hay, providing winter feeding for the cattle and sheep enterprises.
The Crop and Soil Group, which is responsible for experimental crop work, is based at Boghall.
