Research Interests

My research interest in poultry nutrition focuses on understanding how changes to the composition of the diet influence the bird’s physiological perception of the feed matrix and ultimately how this affects live performance. It covers the response of nutrients or feed additives to growth, carcass characteristics, foot pad scores and nutrient digestibilities in poultry. I am also interested in understanding the mechanism and use of supplemental enzymes in broilers, layers and turkeys feed and its effect on their performance.

I took up poultry as a young undergraduate at the University of Agriculture, Peshawar Pakistan and stayed on there until I completed my M.Sc (Hons) in Poultry Science in 1992. I then moved on to University of Aberdeen, UK, where I completed my PhD in 1997 on “Fatty acid profiles and oxidative stability in tissue from chicks feds diets varying in oil and glucosinolate type and content “under the supervision of Dr Acamovic and Dr Scaife. On moving back to Pakistan I joined Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) as a lecturer, where I launched M.Sc (Hons) programme in Livestock Management through distance learning. In 2003, my love for poultry forced me to join University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS), where I worked as an Associate Professor and was involved in extensive teaching and research in the department of Poultry Science. In 2008, I moved back to UK and joined SAC as a post-doctoral researcher at Avian Science and Research Centre (ASRC), SAC with Dr Acamovic before taking up my present position within SAC.

Currently, being a Study Manager at ASRC, I am responsible for the planning, execution, analysis and reporting of commercial nutritional projects. I work closely with several national and international poultry feed ingredient companies/institutes. One of my roles is to provide logistical support to other members of ASRC Team and try to ensure that protocols and contracts are prepared according to SAC Quality Assurance. I am also the point of contact for any enquiries that you may have regarding pig studies.

Teaching

I am involved in the supervision of postgraduate student’s for their dissertation projects.

Research Projects:

I am currently involved in various nutritional projects funded by commercial companies. My current project includes:

• Enteric challenge studies
• Campylobacter challenge studies
• Effect of exogenous enzymes on bird’s productive performance and nutrient digestibilities
• Effect of probiotics on production performance
• Effect of different nutrients on litter moisture, foot pad and hock lesions
