SAC has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a leading university in Pakistan. Professor John Oldham, Head of SAC Research used a video link to finalise the new MoU between SAC and the University of Veterinary & Animal Sciences, Lahore.
At the head of a distinguished delegation in Lahore, which included leading academics and industry leaders, was Professor Dr Nawaz, Vice-Chancellor of UVAS.
UVAS has a long history in the sub-continent, starting in the days of Empire, as the sole Veterinary College in what was then India. Today, located not far from the India-Pakistan border it is not only a leader in veterinary medicine but has a widening interest in other aspects of agricultural development. UVAS has five faculties, all related to animal and business management and works with a wide variety of animals including poultry, dairy cattle and buffalo.
The existing UVAS campus is in the city but a major development is underway outside Lahore where new dairy research facilities, a poultry processing plant and other initiatives are planned. Professors Oldham and Nawaz discussed areas where a relationship with SAC could be mutually beneficial, but in particular in the dairy and poultry sectors.
It was through SAC poultry specialist Dr. Tom Acamovic that the MoU came about. His work with Dr. Farina Khattak of UVAS confirmed a relationship with SAC already established when she completed her PhD at Aberdeen 12 years ago. In 2008 she returned to SAC with the support of a British Council, Commonwealth Fellowship grant. During her six month stay she integrated into the ongoing research activities within ASRC and one of the Deans from UVAS (Dr Pasha) visited Auchincruive.
It is hoped the MoU will prepare the way for further discussion on the development of collaborative research, training and teaching. UVAS is interested in obtaining training from SAC staff, especially in the poultry processing plant and there is a keen interest in interchange of students at all levels, including to PhD.
