Students Ensure Biggart Is Blooming Lovely
A new occupational therapy sensory garden at Biggart Hospital near Ayr is already proving its worth. The garden, which offers rehabilitation and therapy to the patients who work in it, was built with the help of SAC Horticulture students as part of their course work.
The garden was the brainchild of Occupational Therapy Assistants Maxine McClymont and Roy McCulloch. Roy explains: “We wanted to encourage our patients to feel useful. By working in the garden, they are able to see their plants from start to finish, benefiting themselves and other patients. We also wanted to offer a therapeutic environment for patients who may not be able to actively take part, but still want to be involved.”
The garden was funded by NHS Ayrshire & Arran Staff Lottery and designed in such a way that even those patients who are wheelchair-users, or have reduced mobility, can get involved.
Andrew Moore, Assistant Director of Nursing, said, “On behalf of NHS Ayrshire & Arran, I would like to thank the students for helping to make the garden grow. Having a joint project with the college has allowed the youth of today to be involved in the rehabilitation of the youth of yesterday.”
