SAC News Release Ref. No: 09N67
Published: 07 Oct 2009

SAC has appointed Jonathan Cowens as Director of SAC Consulting. He takes up his post in January when he will be responsible for the division of SAC which includes the 25 Farm Business Service offices, 8 Veterinary Disease Surveillance Centres and SAC Specialist Services.

Mr Cowens joins SAC having previously been Chief Executive of HGCA (Home-Grown Cereals Authority) one of the five UK Agricultural Levy Boards.  Its remit included many projects for the cereals and oil seeds sector, including the collation and dissemination of market information, industry training and the commissioning of research.  Before that he had extensive experience in the farmer-owned grain marketing sector and consultancy.

SAC Chairman Lord Lindsay said “I am delighted to welcome Jonathan Cowens to the Board. His previous experience in an especially competitive sector of the agricultural industry will be invaluable to us.”

Brought up in the NE of England, Jonathan Cowens gained a BSc Honours in Horticulture from Reading University. While he continues to be a keen gardener, his career moved in a different direction. He started with Rank Hovis McDougal (RHM Agriculture) then Mardorf Peach & Co. Ltd, an Associated British Foods Company.  Before joining HGCA he was Managing Director of grain marketing co-operative Lingrain Ltd. which, following a merger, became Centaur Grain Ltd.

Jonathan Cowens is very much looking forward to helping SAC accomplish its key business objectives. “This is a very challenging but exciting time for the agricultural industry. With its credibility and reputation established in Scotland, SAC is well placed to expand its operations into other areas of the UK.”

“Jonathan comes to us with a significant network of business contacts across the UK and further afield,” said Lord Lindsay. “SAC has already stated its ambitions to grow our business beyond Scotland. I am sure Jonathan will make a positive contribution to our activities.”
