Latest SAC Technical Notes – Guides On Disease And Pest Control For Barley And Oilseed Rape (Archived Content)
SAC News Release Ref. No: 09N35
Published: 09 Jul 2009
Two new technical notes have joined SAC’s extensive catalogue of handy, concise field guides for farmers and agronomists. They are funded by the Scottish Government under the Veterinary & Advisory Services (VAS) Programme and Advisory Activity, Crop Health schemes.
The two most recent additions deal with pests and disease threats to two important crops for Scotland, following the withdrawal of some chemical control measures. While some of these notes are available in printed form, the majority are available on the SAC website.
TN619: Barley Disease Control
This note describes the factors influencing the severity of diseases of barley affecting foliage, stem base, roots and seed head. These include the variety, weather conditions, crop rotation, cultivation methods, sowing date, and fungicide used. Also included is advice on how to manage disease in an integrated disease programme.
This note brings together new research from the RERAD-funded research programme on barley pathogens.
TN620: Winter Oilseed Rape Pests and Diseases
Winter oilseed rape is affected by a wide range of pests and diseases. However, new problems are beginning to appear as a consequence of changes in pesticide usage and weather patterns. This technical note provides an update on the biology of the main pests and diseases affecting crops. It also contains advice on integrated control measures to manage these problems.
Both these notes are available in print through SAC’s Crop Clinic. They can also be accessed online on the SAC website.
A range of Technical Notes on potato pests and diseases is also under preparation and is expected to be available in the spring of 2010.
