The links between SAC and the University of Malawi were further strengthened by a visit to Bunda College by three SAC staff. They were there as part of the Scottish Government-funded project to improve smallholder dairying in the country.
The three Dumfries-based SAC staff making the trip were Helen Carty of the Veterinary Investigation Service with Mizeck Chagunda and Dave Roberts from the Dairy Research Centre at Crichton. Their discussions covered dairy cow fertility, record keeping and forage production.
One key part of the project they discussed with Professor Leonard Kamwania, Pro Vice Chancellor, University of Malawi is capacity building with four research studentships. There are 3 MSc projects funded by the project and one PhD studentship associated with the project but funded from other sources. Meanwhile, Jenny Gibbons, a Research Technician with SAC's Sustainable Livestock Systems group who has just finished her PhD, is going out to Bunda next week for 3 months sabbatical working with staff on this project.
