Sheep Vets Look To Auchtertyre

SAC’s Hill & Mountain Research Centre at Auchtertyre near Crianlarich was visited recently by over 60 breakouts from the Sheep Veterinary Society's autumn conference. The Society, which is a division of the British Veterinary Association, was holding a three-day conference in Pitlochry on “Sustainable sheep production (principles of disease management)”.

The visit to  Auchtertyre was on the second day of the conference and delegates were met by Drs  John Holland and Conington from SAC’s Sustainable Livestock Systems group.

John Holland took the group to a vantage point where the delegates could get a good view of the farm and the surrounding area and then described the geography, land-use history and livestock systems of the local area.

The current hot topic of declining sheep numbers in the hills was discussed along with and animal health issues associated with hill farms.  Jo Conington gave a presentation on the hill sheep breeding project and other sheep research work being carried out at SAC.

Having had their tea, the delegates made their way back to the fleshpots of Pitlochry.
