Identifying Foul Brood - SAC Courses For Beekeepers
Bee inspectors in the field (opens in new window)
Graeme Sharpe, SAC’s beekeeping specialist is running a series of important, one-day courses for Scottish beekeepers.
With both American (AFB) and European (EFB) Foul Brood now in Scotland it is vital that those managing hives are able to recognise the two diseases and know what to do about them. Both diseases are notifiable under the Bee Diseases and Pests Control Order Scotland 2007.
EFB was confirmed this year in Perthshire on 29th June, following investigations by Scottish Government Bee Inspectors. It was during these inspections that outbreaks of AFB were also discovered in Perthshire and Inverness-shire.
The one-day SAC course will cover a range of bee diseases and exotic pests. While American Foul Brood and European Foul Brood are the most important, he will raise awareness of Small Hive Beetle and Tropilaelaps. There will also be an update on the present position of the parasitic Varroa mite. These training days are free. They are funded by the Scottish Government.
The course will be at:
- Perth, SAC Office, Oakbank Rd. 21st and 22nd October 2009.
- Inverness, SAC Office. Drummondhill. 28th and 29th October 2009.
- Ayr, Auchincruive Campus. 4th and 11th November 2009.
- Aberdeen, Craibstone Campus. 25th and 26th November 2009.
- Edinburgh, SAC King's Buildings. 17th and 18th December 2009.
