Katie Croft, a former SAC student is to represent Scotland in the National final of the Institute of Horticulture 2011 Young Horticulturalist of the year Quiz. It takes place in Harrogate on 7 May 2011 with the chance to win the Percy Thrower travel bursary of £2000.
Katie is presently gaining practical experience at the NTS School of Gardening at Threave after her HND in Horticulture with Plantsmanship, the course jointly taught by SAC and the Royal Botanic Garden.
The Scottish final of the Quiz was held at Glasgow Botanic Gardens in March with Assistant Curator, Louise Bustard asking the questions. The finalists had beaten more than 120 competitors taking part heats held across Scotland. There were individual questions, plant identification rounds and on the buzzer sessions covering a wide range of horticultural topics.
Katie Croft took the early lead and gradually extended it to become the 26th Scottish Champion. In a strong second place came Alan Elliott, another graduate of the Plantsmanship course, who is now working at RBGE mainly in the Herbarium. Third was another SAC student, Robert Ross who is studying for his HND Horticulture at the Ayr Campus. After a slow start Robert ended strongly but could not quite catch up with Alan. The fourth finalist was Daniel Bentley who is on the NQ Course in Botanic Gardening which uses the resources of Dundee Botanic Gardens as well as Dundee College.
The competition could not run without the support of sponsors, Glasgow City Council, Premier One Land Services Ltd, Quercus Garden Plants, MorePeople, Bulldog Tools and Scotgrow.
