Rain No Match for Young Farmers
Panel of agriculture experts questioned by Young Farmer members (opens in new window)
Last week’s heavy downpours did not prevent Young Farmers from across the South and West of Scotland travelling to Ayr to quiz a panel of agriculture’s key local and national players.
The panel evening was organised by the Young Farmers’ Association’s Agri-Affairs Committee and was hosted by SAC in the John Hannah Building at Auchincruive.
Joining SAC Consulting’s Assistant Regional Manager Andrew Leggate on the panel were NFUS Vice-president Alan Bowie, John Scott MSP, the Scottish Government’s Chief Agricultural Officer Drew Sloan and Quality Meat Scotland Chairman Jim McLaren. The Young Farmers’ chairman was Allan Dunlop from Dumfries – a former Auchincruive student.
The well-informed audience posed some challenging questions. These covered topics including how the rising global demand for food will impact on Scottish agriculture, the forthcoming reform of the CAP, the challenge of supporting new entrants to farming and the impact of the Credit Crunch.
Andrew’s 30 years of experience working with local farmers and rural businesses enabled him to give a well-rounded view on the outlook for farming’s upcoming generation. Speaking of the event he said: “Meetings like this are always an excellent opportunity to have a frank and open discussion with the current industry leaders and the future ones.
“The Young Farmer members in the audience asked searching questions about the future of Scottish farming in general and the implications for young entrants into farming in particular. The majority of the young farmers in the audience were SAC graduates and it was encouraging to hear how positive they are about their future in agriculture.”
