WaterAid Team get Wet (opens in new window)

On the 12th June a group of brave SAC mountaineers reached the summit of Bidean à Ghlas Thuil, at a staggering height of 1062m, as part of WaterAid’s Munro Challenge. SAC’s, not so brave, WaterAid Team consisted of Rob and Pauline Fuchs, Chris Stockwell, Norman Stephen and Alex Hilton, all from Craibstone.

The Munro Challenge aims to place a team on top of each peak in the UK, over 3000 feet, on the same date and at roughly the same time in an effort to raise money to improve water supplies for many people around the world. This year we decided to put forward a team and our peak was Bidean à Ghlas Thuil, which is one of the peaks on the An Teallach ridge, on the West coast of Scotland, near Ullapool.

The day started with promise and I swear I almost saw some blue sky. Some of the group had accused me of being optimistic after commenting that ‘the weather could only get better’ than the previous day when we got wet putting our tents up.

The walk started with views of Loch Broome, but it was not long before we reached the cloud base. It was then the rain started. At first it was a slight drizzle, then progressing to heavy rain. By the time we reached the ridge, we had the added bonus of wind, which created horizontal rain. It was of course ironic to be trudging through the pouring rain, whilst raising money for a charity concerned with providing enough water for people in drier areas of the world. Lack of water was certainly not a problem for us.

But we were not going to be put off, after all we are from Aberdeen. After 3 and a half hours we reached the summit of Bidean à Ghlas Thuill (1062m). We then went on to complete the other munro on the ridge Sgùrr Fiona (1060m).

Of course as we walked down the cloud cleared to reveal a great view of the magnificent An Teallach ridge, which we had just walked. It was then time to head back to the tents for some food and a well deserved beer.

Thank you all for sponsoring us. So far we have raised £924 (including gift aid). If you still want to donate to this good cause please go to

We look forward to doing the same next year and hope you can join us. Any suggestions for next year’s peak?
