Gregor Mackintosh (opens in new window)
Former SAC student Gregor Mackintosh has been picking up yet more awards for his rapeseed oil. The 22 year old was runner up in the “Young Entrepreneur of the Year” award, organised by PSYBT (Prince's Scottish Youth Business Trust), ahead of most 900 businesses from all over Scotland who were eligible.
Gregor , from Glendaveny in Aberdeenshire produces Glendaveny Extra Virgin Cold Pressed Rapeseed Oil on the family farm. It is an idea he worked on for his final honours dissertation while at Craibstone. By reacting to consumer interest in cooking and health he has added value to what was just a commodity.
The PSYBT helped Gregor when he approached them for advice in 2009. He received funding to help with the building of a bottling plant within walking distance of his oilseed crops. After harvest the seeds are pressed, the oil filtered and bottled without any industrial processes. It is rich in Vitamin E, Omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids.
With hard work Gregor has been able to capitalise on the publicity of hi s award winning and the Mackintosh of Glendaveny Oil is also sold in Asda, selected farm shops, delicatessens, and butchers throughout Scotland.
Earlier this year he widened the offer with infused oils including lemon, garlic and jalapeno chilli. Through collaboration with a local seafood processor he is involved with a product due to sell in Marks & Spencers, Asda and Sainsbury’s. Work is going on at Glendaveny to expand the facilities and increase output.
The awards ceremony, which is now in its fifteenth year, took place in the Glasgow City Chambers. PSYBT was launched in January 1989 and is a national organisation with offices in 18 Regions across Scotland. To date over 10,000 businesses involving over 12,000 proprietors have been assisted with £35.4m awarded - £31.5m in loans and £3.9m in grants.
