Stall Wars

Encouraged by light-sabre wielding SAC staff there was an excellent Royal Highland Show audience for the Friday afternoon “Stall Wars” event in the SAC Pavilion.

Determined that “the food would be in them” they each tried the produce on offer from four Farmers Market groups representing Fife, Perthshire, Stirlingshire and Dumfries & Galloway. Each of the groups had been given an hour to prepare their displays and then, from 2.00 til 4.00, met the public who, were encouraged to caste a vote for their favourite.

Joining them was Stewart Stevenson MSP, Minister for the Environment, who took on his own assessment challenge with gusto, trying something from every area and blowing his schedule wide open.

The event was equally popular with the contestants. Fife Farmers Market Co-ordinator Barbara Wardlaw commented.

“It was really enjoyable although hard work and I’ve just got my voice back! But great to hear peoples comments and hopefully we have enticed a few more people to go along to a Farmers market.  I was really surprised that The Farmers Markets had not been show cased like this before and would willingly support and encourage more of these at shows”.

The overall winners were a delighted Dumfries and Galloway who had understood better than most the need for a display that was as attractive as it tasted. The SAC Food and Drink team are to be congratulated.

This idea will run again with Stall Wars – The Empire (Biscuit?) Strikes Back is already being planned for next Years Royal Highland Show.
