Crofters take advice on board at Skye Grass Events (opens in new window)
Many of the crofters who attended the recent Skye Grass Events plan to alter their grassland management techniques after receiving expert advice from SAC on the best ways to increase clover levels.
One of the key messages from SAC organic grassland specialist Richard Huxtable was that liming twelve months in advance of re-seeding is an effective means of raising soil ph levels, resulting in a more welcoming environment for white clover.
Ross Mackenzie of SAC Consulting’s Farm Business Services in Portree said: “The two recent Skye Grass Events attracted more than 40 people, with many indicating that they would alter their current grassland management as a result of hearing from our organic grassland specialist. Following the positive reception to the events we will be holding more events in the near future.”
The events, which were organised by SAC’s Janette Sutherland, also featured an oversowing demonstration by George Simon of SimTech, a talk on reducing diffuse pollution on crofts by SAC Climate Change Manager Rebecca Audsley and advice from Peter Addie of Johnny Watson seeds on the most suitable seed mixes for Skye.
