Rural Leadership Discussion Forges New Links Between SAC and the US
New opportunities for international partnerships are on the horizon after SAC’s Dr Sarah Skerratt presented her research into rural community leadership to an influential US delegation visiting Scotland.
Sarah met 30 members of the International Association of Programmes for Agricultural Leadership (IAPAL) which was holding its annual conference in Stirling, hosted by Scottish Enterprise. Her presentation and the discussion that followed revealed that despite the differences in scale between the two countries, opportunities and challenges faced by rural leaders on both sides of the Atlantic are very similar.
Sarah said: “There was a lot of nodding going on when I spoke about what my research had revealed about the key issues involved in rural leadership and it became clear that the issues we face here in Scotland, they face in the US. Their reaction was very positive and we are looking forward to further dialogue and exploring ways in which we can share our findings and experiences for mutual benefit.”
The IAPAL delegates came from organisations including the Rural Ontario Institute, Cornell University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Great Lakes Leadership Academy at Michigan State University, and the University of Florida’s Leadership Institute for Agriculture & Natural Resources.
Sarah was invited to speak to IAPAL by Scottish Enterprise. SAC delivers the Scottish Enterprise Rural Leadership Programme which has so far helped more than 125 key business personnel from across rural Scotland become more effective leaders.
