Science of Farming and the Countryside SAC Staff Assist Royal Northern Initiative

SAC staff were among those welcoming secondary School pupils from the NE to the Science of farming and the Countryside day, organised by the Royal Northern Countryside Initiative.

Held at Glenbervie Home Farm, owned by the Macphie family, the event aims to give students and understanding of how the subjects they are doing at school can relate to work in rural areas. The day offers a chance to put classroom theory into real life practice.

A range of SAC experts were involved, some from Craibstone campus, others from the Elgin FRBS Office. Among the activities on the programme was one helping physics students calculate the safe loading of a Manitou lifter and see at first hand what happens when the tipping point is reached. Biology students were shown how to take soil samples to study structure, pH and fauna. Another piece of work involved measuring grass heights related to soil N content, while another study showed the significance of biodiversity monitoring.

The high profile event is part of the Royal Northern Agricultural societies initiative to promote awareness of the countryside and rural industries through education. SAC staff join local businesses and landowners in getting the messages across in an interesting and challenging way.
