Pupils Inspired by Riverside Tour

A recent tour of SAC’s innovative new Riverside Campus in Ayr offered inspiration to 80 S5 and S6 pupils considering their future career paths.

The event introduced the pupils to the concepts of sustainable building and green technology through the architecture and the construction of the new campus.

As today’s developers seek to minimise a new building’s impact on the environment, they use technologies such as biomass heating, natural ventilation, passive solar gain, renewable heat and power and sustainable urban drainage systems. Many of these technologies are built into the new £70 million campus development, making it one the UK’s most environmentally friendly Higher Education facilities.

The pupils enjoyed guided tour of the building. They also heard talks from two leaders in the sustainable building field - Elaine Paterson of RMJM Architects, who was the campus’ project architect and David Sutherland of Lend Lease, one of the project’s senior construction managers.

SAC Lecturer Gary Tierney said: “The Riverside Campus is an excellent example of best practice when it comes to modern, sustainable buildings. Seeing technologies in action really helped the pupils’ understanding and, as they consider the careers they wish to purses, gave them a flavour of what a job in architecture or construction might involve. The event was a real success and the pupils asked a lot of questions both during the tour and during the discussion with Elaine and David.

“We offer Sustainable Building Technology and Green Technology courses and hope to see some of the pupils who attended the event sign up to take their learning further in a campus where they will be able to connect the curriculum to their built environment every day.”

The schools which took part were Ayr Academy, Wellington School; Belmont Academy; and Kyle Academy, all in Ayr and Glasgow’s Holyrood Academy.
