Students give Thumbs Up to Riverside Campus

SAC students who will be studying at the new Riverside Campus in Ayr come September have given it the thumbs up after enjoying a sneak preview of the £70 million development.

The students were invited to tour the new building in advance of its official opening at the start of the next academic year. They were shown around by the building contractor Lend Lease and staff from SAC and the University of the West of Scotland (UWS), with which SAC will share the campus.

The two-hour visit started in the impressive reception atrium then took in the library, refectory, lecture theatre, student bar and gymnasium. The students also visited the SAC areas of the building, viewing the teaching rooms, laboratories and Education Office.

Following the visit, Countryside Management student Mark Johnston said: “I think the new campus will be a great place to study - it will be good to be working in a modern, well-designed building.”

Comments from other students on the tour included, “It will be a nice change – something new and exciting” and “Thumbs up!”.

Developed in consultation with the Natural Garden Society, Historic Scotland, Scottish Natural Heritage and the Scottish Wildlife Trust, the new campus will provide Ayrshire with one of the UK's most modern, environmentally-friendly and sustainable higher education learning environments.

The new building is designed to the highest environmental rating – BREEAM Excellent (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) – adopting sustainable strategies within the design and operation of the new building.

SAC Ayr’s Senior Tutor Alison Gillespie, who accompanied the students said of their reaction to the new campus: “The general feeling I got was that they were all very impressed and they asked very good questions during the tour. I would hope that they could also see first hand the good working relationship that SAC enjoys with UWS.”
