Richard Cowie’s Quality Assurance Expertise Recognised by UN

The United Nations recently invited Aberdeen based Richard Cowie, Senior Quality Assurance Manager with SAC, to their Rome HQ.

He chaired the first day of an “experts meeting” about Quality Control for veterinary and animal nutrition laboratories in the developing world. Since then he has been asked to join an international network of nominated ‘QA Experts’ on the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation website.

In a drive to reduce world hunger the FAO project aims to increase the health and wellbeing of farm animals and subsequently the heath of the local populations, by increasing livestock productivity. They contacted SAC about proposals to develop a Quality Management System, compliant with ISO 17025, that would be made available in the developing world (mainly Africa, Asia and the former USSR).

The proposed Quality Management System would initially concentrate on QA processes and procedures while including some animal nutrition analysis. This would be expanded later to include microbiology procedures.

Richard joined seven other specialists from Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, USA and New Zealand at the experts meeting where the Quality Management System was further refined and a 250 page document produced. He was asked to develop further some areas after the meeting. The finished document will be distributed free to interested parties in the developing world by the UN.
