Poultry Science Course is Going the Distance
Poultry Science students (opens in new window)
SAC’s distance learning postgraduate poultry course enters its second year with over 30 professionals from every corner of the globe enrolled on the course.
Students of the MSc in Applied Poultry Science, are almost all working in or for the poultry industry as veterinarians, production managers, owners of family-run poultry production businesses, pharmaceutical company employees or carrying out research related to the poultry production. Although most of the participants are based in the UK there are also students from other countries including Belgium and South Africa.
The course was developed by SAC in conjunction with the poultry industry, ensuring the training students receive is tailored to meeting the industry’s needs. One clear issue is that busy poultry industry professionals can find it difficult to make time to upgrade their qualifications, so a distance learning qualification has been warmly welcomed.
Much of the course work can be done at home on a PC or laptop. Advice is always available at the end of a phone and there are also on-line tutorials. One special feature is a number of study weekends where students can meet others in the same position.
The first and second year students met at SAC’s new Riverside Campus in Ayr recently for one such study weekend.
Programme Leader Jill Offer said: “Given the breadth of experience and expertise, the students find the study weekends are a fantastic networking opportunity – they are able to develop an international picture of the poultry industry and new friends can become another source of helpful advice and reassurance.”
