Andy Evans explains about Free Living Nematodes. (opens in new window)
SAC potato specialist joined colleagues from SCRI and SASA at the Potatoes in Practice event held at Balruddery Farm near Dundee. Despite the weather, which had left the area a quagmire in places, the attendance was excellent with consultants busy at the plots and on the stands.
Hosted by SCRI the event focussed on the threats from pests and disease. SAC interest include the growing concerns about pit rot in tubers which appears to be linked in some way to certain desiccants used to kill off the haulm prior to harvest. The damage caused by free living nematodes is also something causing concern, although not all producers are aware of how much damage they can cause. Early next year SAC will begin research into free living nematodes.
“Potatoes in Practice” owes much to the involvement of SAC potato guru and Principal Consultant Stuart Wale. With Stuart soon to “retire” from SAC (although the exact interpretation of that is unsure) special mention was made of Stuart’s contribution by Potato Council Chairman Allan Stevenson.
