Philippa’s Energy Wins Her A New Student Prize

The first recipient of a new award aimed at encouraging Masters students to submit their work for publication has received her prize from SAC’s Edinburgh Dean Dr Bill Spoor.
Philippa Parmiter has just completed the Environmental Protection and Management MSc which is run by SAC as part of the University of Edinburgh’s Geosciences Masters programme. Her dissertation involved a study into the sustainability of photovoltaic systems, which convert energy from light into electricity.
In an effort to encourage more students to go the extra mile and submit papers for publication on the back of their MSc dissertations, the Masters Committee recently introduced a £600 cash prize award to the student who submitted the best manuscript for peer review.
Philippa rose to the challenge and an account of her study - which concluded that photovoltaic can offer energy payback in half the time of the full operating life of the system - is now due to be published in the international journal, Energy Policy.
SAC’s Dr Oliver Knox said: ‘For most students, the end of the work comes with completion of their dissertation but Philippa went further and sought to have her work published. She was awarded the prize as proof that it is possible to generate a manuscript of peer review quality on the back of 12 weeks of well-planned research. The award also recognises the extra time she put in after the degree programme to format and submit the paper. This achievement will hopefully motivate this year’s students and encourage further outputs from the Masters programme in coming years.’
