David Lamb as Robin Hood (opens in new window)
To the unsophisticated it might seem impossible to make a connection between Baghdad and Sherwood Forest, but hey, if Shakespeare can “bring Birnham Wood to Dunsinane”, no task is too challenging for the Craibstone Panto Team.
Earlier this month “Aladdin the Woods” covered all the bases and, courtesy of a magic carpet, quite a bit of the solar system as well. It was an experience that hopefully has not left David Younie permanently (Lady) Gaga.
Having been postponed because of the pre Christmas weather the three performance programme (including a matinee) was run early in the new year with charities Cash for Kids and Children in Need the beneficiaries. Quite what non SAC folk made of it all I cannot tell but for those in the know it was another bizarrely funny experience involving a brave group of students and staff willingly making a spectacle of themselves for charity.
As Robin Hood David Lamb looked fetching in fluorescent green tights while Christine Watson reverted to her natural long platinum blond locks to play a Maid Marion depressed by damp forests and seeking sunnier climes. By the end of three acts she had made it (and Aladdin) arriving in Bagdad after a magic carpet ride buzzed by a Federation Star Fleet. Happily by then Collette Coll, released from the lamp as Jeannie frae Coatbridge - Italian accent and all - had also arranged for Jasmine (3rd Year Agric Rachel Christie) to get Robin all a quiver in the greenwood. With the Mackie sponsored panto cow playing a camel, playwright Lamb had delivered a slightly complicated tale!
These days David Younie seems to spend more time in TK Max than promoting organic farming, judging by the outrageous outfits and the height of his heels and hemlines. Unlike David, Patrick Hughes, as Widow Twankey - the other half of an always popular pantomime dame duo was more traditionally dressed but had a hard time explaining why a medieval Baghdad laundry housed an electric washing machine. ith one of the most laid back villains in Norman Stephen, one of the shortest Little John’s and the “Wishy Washers” adding their polish to a strong musical mix, it was an experience enjoyed by all.
