SAC Environmental Economist Dr Klaus Glenk has just returned from a workshop in Brazil organised by the Pantanal International Network.
The Network supports collaboration among British, European and Brazilian scientists to undertake research informing future policy-making in the Pantanal, a highly vulnerable ecosystem of global significance.
Klaus presented the findings of his recent research project to scientists from Brazil and neighbouring countries. His research explored the Scottish public’s attitudes towards different responses to climate change-induced flooding.
Explaining the relevance of this Scottish-based research to the Pantanal, Klaus said: “Over the last three decades there have been increased threats to the Pantanal wetland system due to, for example, urban growth and agriculture intensification. Climate change will likely become another important driver of change.
“My Scottish flood risk research was ultimately aimed at thinking about climate change adaptation beyond a purely economic perspective, helping us understand why certain types of responses are favoured more than others. In the Pantanal, a better understanding of the preferences of local people could help inform the development of local and regional adaptation strategies.”
