Oliver, a Shoe in for a Prize

Most researchers are trying to generate papers for the inside of journals, but Dr. Oliver Knox of SAC Crop and Soils group is hopefully going to grace the cover of one! At least some photos he took associated with very clayey “vertisol” soils in Australia.

Earlier this year Oliver entered a competition held by the British Society of Soil Science (BSSS) looking for a series of four images reflecting aspects of soil science. At their July AGM it was announced that his images of seeding, irrigation monitoring equipment, an irrigation event and a wolf spider were joint winners of the competition. The pictures should appear on the cover of the European Journal of Soil Science at some point later this year.

Oliver has had a keen interest in photography for sometime. He has received plaudits for his pictures in the past but this is the first time he’s won anything in the UK. If there is one bit of advice that Oliver would impart it would be that you don’t need the latest, greatest kit to get good results. The images he entered for the competition were taken on a 1.4 mega pixel compact brought in 2003. Most folk can probably take better resolution images today on their phones, so if something looks interesting to you then why not just snap it. You never know if it might also be interesting to someone else.

The vertisol covered boots in our photo did not make it to the competition, but are nevertheless an arresting image.
