Smooth Move to Riverside

Riverside Campus, Ayr (opens in new window)

Riverside Staff (opens in new window)

Months of planning and anticipation finally came to fruition on 28 July when the SAC’s Ayr-based Learning staff took up residence in their brand new Riverside Campus.

SAC is sharing the £70 million campus building with the University of the West of Scotland. Fifty SAC staff members moved in last week, to be joined in September by 420 students. Around 200 staff and 2600 students of UWS will work and study at Riverside.

New facilities for use by both students and staff include fit-for-purpose teaching accommodation, an ultra-modern library, high quality catering, a cybercafé, a brand new students’ union and a well-equipped sports hall.

The aim in designing the campus was to provide a state-of-the-art learning centre while minimising the development’s environmental impact. Riverside is now one of the UK’s most environmentally friendly Higher Education facilities. The building has achieved the award of a ‘BREEAM Excellent’ rating from the Building Research Establishment which sets the standard for best practice in sustainable design.

Academic Development Group Manager Chris Smith, who has been involved in planning and co-ordinating the staff relocation, was pleased to report that the move to the new building went smoothly.

“For many members of staff, it was a doubly fresh start as they returned from their summer holidays to move straight into the new campus,” he said. “The sense of excitement and expectation of what’s to come in this new, modern purpose-built campus was clear. Already there’s a sense of joining a larger teaching and learning community with all of the SAC staff in one wing, rather than being dispersed across three separate buildings.

“There are also new faces, with some 200 UWS colleagues to meet and get to know. We now have a busy seven weeks ahead as we prepare for the arrival of students on 26 September. By that time we will all be familiar with the impressive AV technology in the teaching rooms and the labs, which should be a real improvement for staff and students alike.”
