Jess Pulls in a Prize

First year PhD student Jessica Hopkins has been awarded one of two British Poultry Council Research Scholarships for her work with poultry. She received her award recently at a ceremony at the House of Commons.

Jess, whose PhD, which is funded by the Humane Slaughter Association, works at SAC’s Avian Science Research Centre on the Auchincruive Estate. She is supervised by Behavioural Scientist Dr Vicky Sandilands.

The research Jess is doing seeks to provide a mechanical alternative to the manual culling of poultry. Traditionally this is done by neck pulling, but this method can be inaccurate, especially if those doing it are unskilled or becoming fatigued. It is believed an alternative method would be useful to smallholders, especially those new to poultry keeping. The work is in its early stages at present but it is Jess’ intention to involve the industry throughout the development process, to ensure that the technique is practical, robust, and accurate.

The award ceremony was in the Member’s Dining Room at the Commons Members’ and was sponsored by Anne McIntosh MP who also presented the award. Miss McIntosh is the Chair of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee. Others present included members from across the poultry industry and research sectors.
