A group of young farmers from the Rhineland Rural Youth Organisation gained an insight into livestock research when they paid a visit to SAC’s beef and sheep units on the outskirts of Edinburgh.
The 36 guests were made to feel at home thanks to SAC’s Senior Animal Geneticist Professor Rainer Roehe, who also comes from Germany and conversed with the students in their native language during the tour. Life Sciences Programme Leader Dr Bill Dingwall co-hosted the tour with Professor Roehe.
The first part of the visit took place in the beef unit where the visitors were especially impressed with the newly opened GreenCow facility for measuring methane emissions from cattle. They were keen to know how the measurements were taken and observed that the facility has been built to fulfill highest animal welfare standards. It was then on to the sheep unit at Woodhouselee where lambing of the lowground sheep flock was nearing completion. In addition to observing the level of organisation within the lambing they discussed the current welfare issues relating to castration.
Professor Roehe said: “The young farmers asked many questions about everything they saw and have gone home with a very positive impression of the innovative livestock research being undertaken by SAC.”
